There is an appealing background to the Cambodia casinos that reside just across the border from nearby Thailand, in which gambling den gaming is against the law. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a relatively small area in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent area, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The amazing capital gained from the casinos ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a couple of restrictions requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be mainly Thai; however, investment sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 09:00 to 1700, and even though visas are supposedly necessary to cross, there are ways around this, as is real of many border crossings.
The 1st Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored bateau casino, features one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 60 gaming tables. The Naga river boat is open all hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of 21, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are one hundred and fifty slot machine games and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slots and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machines and 96 table games, including eighty seven baccarat banque (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and 66 of the familiar tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight casinos in Poipet, also a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international resort and hotel compound that features numerous luxuries aside from the gambling den, which houses ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty slot machine games and eighty eight table games.
