There is a captivating background to the Cambodia casinos that reside just across the border from neighboring Thailand, in which casino betting is not legal. Eight casinos are established in a relatively tiny area in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect location, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai laborers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing capital accrued from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of limitations constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; however, funding sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and though visas are allegedly necessary to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is true of many borders.
The initial Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary bateau gambling hall, features one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and sixty gaming tables. The Naga gambling hall never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, four tables of 21, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are 150 slot machine games and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slot machines and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and sixty six of the familiar gaming tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 casinos in Poipet, also a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational vacation and hotel building that features a number of conveniences aside from the gambling den, which has ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and eighty eight gaming tables.
