There is an interesting background to the Cambodia casinos that lie just over the dividing line from next door Thailand, in which gambling den wagering is banned. Eight gambling dens are situated in a generally small space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling dens is in an excellent spot, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai laborers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The amazing income gained from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few controls constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; although, funding sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and even though visas are apparently required to cross, there are ways around this, as is accurate of many border crossings.

The original Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary boat gambling hall, features 150 one armed bandits and 60 table games. The Naga casino never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The initial casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown before long opened. There are 150 slot machine games and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 one armed bandits and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and sixty six of the normal gaming tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive vacation and hotel building that highlights numerous amenities aside from the gambling hall, which houses ten thousand square feet of 130 slot machines and 88 tables.
