There is a captivating story to the Cambodia casinos that reside just across the border from next door Thailand, where casino gaming is banned. Eight casinos are based in a relatively tiny area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent location, a 3 to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to more than 12.5 million, and there are a number of controls constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; however, investment sources are vague. The borders are ceremoniously open from 09:00 to 1700, and though visas are allegedly needed to cross, there are means around this, as is true of many border crossings.
The 1st Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored boat gambling hall, features one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 60 table games. The Naga gambling den never closes with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of 21, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred one armed bandits and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and 96 table games, including 87 baccarat banque (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and sixty six of the familiar table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the 8 casinos in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive resort and hotel building that features a number of conveniences on top of the casino, which houses 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and 88 tables.
